High-level stats for week of 2019-04-30 - 2019-05-06

  • Total works categorized F/F on AO3: 4011 (+855 from last week)

  • Works I classified F/F: 2466 (+509 from last week) (1282 new, 1184 continued)

  • 0.96% of all 258111 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • Unfortunately, my guess is that last week's MCU dip is an artifact of my gathering the data at a different time in the week than usual. Sorry about that --- it's an incentive to automate more of this, so that we don't lose signal as a result of my offline schedule. (Also, bluntly, that artifact make me suspicious that I'm still dramatically overcounting single works with a lot of ships in them. I thought I fixed that. Here's a theory I'm not going to check, but which seems super plausible for MCU: suppose someone has a mammoth WIP with 30 ships in it, of which 29 are M/M ships and 1 is Maria/Natasha. I bet I'm not applying a discount rate to that work as an F/F work, because it only has one F/F ship. Now suppose there are a lot of works like that... Ugh.) I know from the survey that you my readers are not particularly bothered by inaccuracies in the internals of my rating system, but they really bother me, and they bother me precisely because when I go in after an event like Endgame and try to answer questions like "Which F/F ships in MCU got the biggest bounce from this movie?", which some of you probably do care about, I can't do it because of data inaccuracy problems.
  • Anyway, MCU: it looks like the Carol/Valkyrie train is leaving the station with everyone aboard. Looking under the hood, I'm honestly not seeing anything in the top ten ships this week that I can point to as specifically Endgame-centric: feel free to speculate about this in the comments: those top ten ships are: Carol,Valkyrie (28), Natasha,Wanda (19), Carol,Maria R (17), Maria H/Natasha (15), Carol,Maria R,Monica (8), Shuri/MJ (7), Natasha/Pepper (6), Carol/Natasha (6), Angie/Peggy (5), Jessica Jones,Natasha (4). You could argue for a Natasha bounce, and that's probably accurate, but on the other hand five of the top ten ships had Natasha the week before Endgame came out too. Clearly I am interested in doing a deep-dive into MCU F/F ships over time. Maybe I will.
