Come join us at [community profile] seasons_of_fandom! It's the landcomm formerly known as [community profile] lands_of_magic. A landcomm is a super fun community where the mods post challenges that you complete for points. Challenges could be related to writing prompts, art/graphic prompts, or just general meme-type questions/games. It was a blast last round, and you can use any fandom(s) you like. This comm reminds me of how participatory things used to be on Livejournal! I'm on team Summer. Tell them I sent you :)

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

How many books are you usually reading?

I have a minimum of 5 on the gp at any given time: one each of fiction and nonfiction on both phone and ereader (no overlap) plus a paper book that can be either.

Title: The PFLAG Conference
Author: [personal profile] senmut
Prompt: Dorothy Zbornak goes into a bar and meets... Julia Sugarbaker (Designing Women)!
Fandoms: The Golden Girls / Designing Women
Word count: 587
Rating: General Audiences
Contents: The situation for support for Southern queers has not changed since the era of these shows and that is referenced here.

The PFLAG Conference

As far as conferences and political rallies went, Dorothy was glad this one seemed to be staying at a civil discourse. Not, she amended in her own thoughts, that she wasn't ready to blaze truth across narrow-minds in a hope of seeing people live better, stronger lives in the open. She had to stand up for all of her principles, and was glad that joining PFLAG had given her a new outlet to do so.

Still, it had been a long day, and while she wasn't given to drinking much, a nightcap would settle her muscles down, giving her a better chance for sleep in the hotel's luxurious bed. She slipped into more casual, but still classy, attire, picked up her clutch, and headed down to the bar. It might even give her a chance to mingle with others of like minds.

If she found some of different minds, she had a piece or two of her own she'd be able to give out.

Julia Sugarbaker had been brewing on a storm since early that morning. It was bad enough that Georgia didn't have a proper organization to help the young men and women suffering from vitriol and hate, but she'd run into one too many damned Yankees tossing around their patronizing looks about even attempting to get one set up!

She straightened out her blouse, adjusted the sleeve at the wrists, and then snatched up her purse rather than stay in this ridiculously ill-decorated hotel room. She'd seen a bar downstairs. A nice little cocktail hour would help bring her down from her anger, and leave her more likely to find the right words on where to tell the next New York organizer where they could stick their disbelief in gay rights for the South!

Dorothy had seen the brunette going into one of the conference rooms earlier in the day. The decided emphasis on how the woman sat at the bar next to her spoke of difficulties.

"You're here with the PFLAG conference, yes?" Dorothy asked after the woman had a mint julep in front of her, while playing with the straw in her Long Island Iced Tea.

"I am here attempting to convince them to invest in my geographical region instead of writing us all off under the heels of those — " The woman cut herself off completely, took a deep breath. "Yes," she answered instead. "Julia Sugarbaker."

Dorothy raised an eyebrow. "The Julie Sugarbaker who was thanked in Representative Sugarbaker's speech last week?"

Julia softened her stance. "You pay attention to Washington, I take it, ma'am?"

"Dorothy Zbornak. Trying to put more effort into my ideals these days.

"And yes. Helping keep my chapter informed of events, since I have more free time."

"Were you instrumental in organization, or did you step in later? And either way, would you be willing to share any tips? The idiot I spoke to today doesn't feel there is any room in Georgia for them."

Dorothy sighed. "There are so many places in Florida that need outreach, and we run into that there. Or upstate New York, because no, the entire state does not follow the city's lead," she agreed, sympathizing. "I would be glad to work with you, and talk about how to get the support you need."

Julia smiled broadly. "Then Ms. Zbornak, I am looking forward to getting to know you."

"Likewise. Someone willing to stand up when the deck is stacked that way is the kind of woman I'd like to know," Dorothy agreed.

And here you find this week's playlist.

Short reminder:
You can post unlimited works, but the total weekly regular points are 15.
You don't have to use both prompts, but you can reach maximum points by using one prompt only.
The lucky color can bring some extra points when following some special rules (optional!)
The color is always connected with the given prompt (color 1 belongs to prompt 1 / color 2 belongs to prompt 2)
You can earn extra points once for each prompt.

Color blue = write a fic in first person or create three icons with a plain blue background
Color orange = write a crossover or create a graphic work based on two different fandoms
Color yellow = write a 'dialogue only' ficlet or create two 'text only' graphics bigger than an icon
Color white = write an poem (haiku is fine) or create two icons based on any RL character(s)
Color green = Joker: you will earn five extra points for free
Color red = Zonk: you won't earn any extra points for the connected prompt

Complete rules/points H E R E

If you want to participate in the team challenge (even if you didn't sign up, feel free to join as a joker at any time), go H E R E

Don't forget that you have three wildcards to swap a prompt for any from your prompt list. The lucky number remains unaffected!

Catch up
Some participants have missed posting last week. They are marked with 'catch up' in the list.
For this week your maximum points increase from 15 to 30.
You can use each lucky color twice to earn some extra points (Joker excluded!).

Hiatus List
Participants who have missed more than three weeks in a row will be moved to the hiatus list. Don't worry, this is only to keep the playlist easier to handle. You are more than welcome to jump back into the game at any time.

Mighty Jill Off (2008)

Returning to Pride Month media, I played Mighty Jill Off by Anna Anthropy. If you're looking for a precision platformer made by a trans woman and you've already beaten Celeste, fear not, for this game also exists!

pixel girl in a gimp suit avoids spiky hazards

The setup is that Jill has to earn the right to lick her domme's boots by platforming her way up a creepy tower past various obstacles such as fire and spikes and deadly skull-spiders. The kinky content is only in the framing cutscenes, but it does make you spend the entire game thinking about the D/s dynamics between game developers and players, which I believe is the point. You keep hitting the spikes and dying, grr! But you keep trying again and again because you have to prove your worth, or maybe you just crave punishment. When you try to exit the game it asks if you really want to safeword. Good times.

The game is short—I didn't check the time, but I think I spent maybe an hour on it—and the platforming is not actually that hard. (Certainly not as hard as Celeste.) There are a lot of checkpoints. Make sure you note the controls before you start, though: pressing jump again in the air stops the jump early, and hitting the jump key repeatedly makes you slow-fall. You have to spam the key aggressively for long stretches to get through some parts, which can be physically uncomfortable, but again I am sure that's on purpose.

(I guess a lot of people learned of this game because Jill is an unlockable character in Super Meat Boy, which I have never played, but I'm told it's good. It's not currently on my wishlist, but maybe if one of the devs comes out as trans I'll consider it.)

Mighty Jill Off is free on itch.io. If you have trouble running it, check the comments there for compatibility tips!

Thoughts on "MobLand", season 1

Jun. 15th, 2025 07:22 pm
sandrine: (Mitch/Joey)
[personal profile] sandrine
I enjoyed the first season of MobLand so much! Apparently, it's from the creators of Ray Donovan and was originally supposed to be a Ray Donovan prequel but then became its own thing – which I think was a good choice because as much as I like Ray, I'm glad that Harry is not Ray. And I'm especially glad that Harry isn't weighted down by Ray's dysfunctional family. He's already too entangled in the Harrigans' dysfunctional family. :D

Spoilers!Tom Hardy is fantastic! I like how Harry's both sympathetic and utterly ruthless when he needs to be, and incredibly calm under pressure. I like how loyal he is to the Harrigans – well, to Kevin at least. I thought around the mid-point of the show that maybe Harry was the police informant after all, trying to bring down the Harrigans from within, but in the end it turned out that his friendship to Kevin was important enough for him to stick with them even though Conrad is slipping and Meave is fucking insane.

Conrad is an unusual role for Pierce Brosnan. At the beginning, I expected him to be the all-powerful mob boss who was moving everyone around like pieces on a chess board, and it was great how the show revealed bit by bit that he'd long since lost control and was just lashing out. And Meave! She's horrible! I don't buy her "I was just testing everyone" explanation at the end – I think she's a vengeful sadist attempting to make a power play that failed and now she's trying to justify it. Good on Kevin to stand up to them in the final episode. I also liked the scene with Kevin and Bella at the end where they both revealed their traumatic history of sexual assault to each other and bonded over it. I'm not quite sure if Kevin should trust Bella completely, considering that she's been hitting on Harry, but it was a sweet hurt/comfort-y moment, anyhow.

Seeing Lara Pulver and Joanne Froggatt in a show together took me all the way back to my Robin Hood days. And imagine that – I feel the same way about their characters here than I did about their Robin Hood characters! /:D\ As in, I like Bella, but wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her, and I think Jan is annoying as hell. I'm sympathetic to the whole 'my husband is a mob enforcer and I hate how my life is shaped by fear and violence' but at the same time, I don't think this is news to her, considering her 'I don't want to know about your job' speech earlier in the season. And what's worse – I don't get the impression that she even likes Harry or is into him. Like, why is she with him to begin with? It doesn't help that she and Hardy have no chemistry at all. It shouldn't come as a surprise that I hated the cliffhanger ending. It was so dumb, it was almost funny.

Unfortunately, there's nothing for me to ship, so I don't have any fannish interest in the show. In the first episode, I briefly entertained the idea of Eddie Harrigan and Tommy Stevenson canonically hooking up in some kind of Romeo-and-Juliet sort of romance, but it turned out that my perceptions of where their relationship was going were… grossly misguided. 😬😬 That was unfortunate. I really enjoyed their interactions, but how it ended ruined by interest in exploring the dynamic further. Alas. And I can see the potential of Harry/Kevin, but their relationship is lacking the antagonism I prefer in my ships.

Either way, I really hope the show will be renewed and we'll get another series!

Eating: This weekend is [personal profile] scruloose's and my anniversary (year 22 is a go!), so last night we ordered Chinese roast duck and crispy pork belly and had half of it, with the rest set for supper tonight. Sous vide reheating works so well. This future is a complete nightmare in so many ways, but we sure do have cool kitchen technology. (Kitchen technology that spies on you, talks to the internet, and/or demands proof of your humanity is excluded from this praise.)

Reading: Two novels last week: Chuck Tingle's Camp Damascus and Alix E. Harrow's Starling House. I parasocially adore Chuck Tingle as a person, but this was my first time reading any of his work, and it's very possible it'll be my only time, as I just plain didn't click with this one. I had a better time with Starling House (and it too was my first book by its author), but also didn't really bond.

I'm currently about halfway through Adrian Tchaikovsky's Service Model, and can definitely see why it gets compared to Murderbot from some angles, although the vibe is wildly different and I can't say I would've made the comparison myself. (Ginny noted approvingly that anything people dare compare to her beloved Murderbot has a high bar to reach, and she feels it's fair in this case.) But then, whatever the things are that make a book really click/resonate for me, they don't seem to have any connection to the things that make people draw comparisons. Too nebulous, I guess. Anyway, this is an interesting read so far.

Watching: Murderbot, of course. I liked last week's episode a lot. Besides that, [personal profile] scruloose and I saw ep. 2x02 of Kingdom [disambiguation: the historical Korean zombie show] and, for a change of pace, got back to watching the original Leverage.

Some of you may dimly recall that in the days before covid, there were a few years there where we and Ginny and Kas would go to [personal profile] wildpear -and-family's place and watch TV on Sunday nights. We got through a couple of shows that way, and started in on Leverage, which I'd seen up to about halfway (?) through season 4 and then somehow wandered off from despite loving it, and otherwise only saw a couple of later episodes, including the series finale; Ginny had seen and adored the entire thing, and I think Kas was in the same camp as [personal profile] scruloose and [personal profile] wildpear and her then-partner and hadn't seen it.

We made it to...well, roughly halfway through season 4. [personal profile] wildpear's kidling, Pumpkin, was old enough by then to want in on what we were watching, so they sat in for TV night, just in time for "The Grave Danger Job", which freaked them out really, really badly (fair! That episode is brutal!). My mental timeline here is very fuzzy on how long that was before covid arrived, but it wasn't too big a gap, and all in all, that was the end of our group watch. And I still basically hadn't seen past somewhere in season 4 (plus the finale). I watched the first few episodes of season 1 of Leverage: Redemption when that came out, and with that, too, I wandered off and kept meaning to get back to it.

But last week, [personal profile] scruloose and I took the DVDs off the shelf and got back to it. We have now seen "The Boiler Room Job" (which I'm confident I'd seen before, but I wonder if I'll know for sure when I hit new-to-me episodes?). Hopefully this time I'll actually see it all through properly. In theory, at some point we'll get to have cognitive dissonance over Noah Wyle, which will be funny since Leverage: Redemption was where we first saw him but now my association with him is 95% The Pitt.
