High-level stats for week of 2021-01-26 - 2021-02-01

  • Total works categorized F/F on AO3: 7311 (+219 from last week)

  • Works I classified F/F: 4564 (+114 from last week) (2145 new, 2419 continued)

  • 1.14% of all 401375 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • More permutation in, but stability of, the top seven --- Supergirl is back on top. Dangan Ronpa is doing particularly well right now; that fandom had never reached slot two before, and now it's been there for two weeks in a row.
  • On the other end, new TV fandom The Wilds hits the charts for the first time at rank 20. Is this fandom is going all the way to the top, or is it a flash in the pan? It's more fun to make predictions and be wrong later, so here goes (and I'm bringing in the "number of ships" graph to help make my case): The Wilds will not make the top five on the strength of its first season. There are only nine distinct ships this week, containing ten characters, and the (canonical?) Shelby/Toni ship is extremely dominant. It's not impossible for a fandom with relatively few characters and a very dominant ship to do well, and arguably the trajectory of Owl House shows a pattern for how. But Owl House first entered the charts with 15 ships containing 13 characters. I think the numbers just aren't there for The Wilds to do what Owl House did, and I think Owl House has about the minimum number of distinct ships that can get a fandom to the top quarter of this particular chart. If you think I'm wrong, I'd love to hear about it!
