I want to shine an occasional spotlight on fandoms that are in flux. There are two kinds of fandoms here:

  • Fandoms that are growing rapidly, which are typically not in the top 20 now, and may never get there, but might be interesting for F/F readers to check out and encourage.
  • Fandoms that are losing ground on the top 20, and seem to be "post-peak." They may well peak again in the future, but it's a good moment to look back at the impressive amount of F/F which has been written so far.

I'd love for readers to help me signal-boost some recs for these fandoms. If you've read and enjoyed F/F fic in any of the fandoms listed in this post (either the new ones or the old standards), please send me some works you liked! I'll share all the recs I get in a future Week In Review post. Feel free to send recs on Tumblr as reposts, inbox messages, or DMs, and on Dreamwidth as comments or messages. (Let me know if you don't want to be credited for your rec.)

Fandoms that are growing rapidly

Each of these fandoms has at least twice as many total F/F works now as it did 12 weeks ago.

  • KPop Demon Hunters (2025): You know... KPop Demon Hunters? The movie that combines fans' love of KPop and fans' love of Netflix cartoons to produce a 400-F/F-works-per-week juggernaut that has topped the chart for the past seven weeks. You've possibly heard of it. Top ship is Mira/Rumi/Zoey.
  • ウマ娘 プリティーダービー | Uma Musume: Pretty Derby (Anime): This is another one which has grown from very few works to be a charting fandom in the past quarter. It's an anime about "horse girls," anthropomorphised racehorses, and its recent popularity on AO3 is likely due to the video game, which was released in English for the first time in June 2025. About 2/3 of all works in the fandom are F/F, and it's an ensemble fandom, with half a dozen ships that have at least 1/4 as many works as the top ship (Agnes Tachyon/Jungle Pocket).
  • Bet (TV 2025): A Canadian teen psychological drama on Netflix, adapted from a manga series, about a boarding school with a high-stakes gambling club. Fic in the fandom is overwhelmingly F/F, is growing about 12 F/F works/week, and the top ship is Jabami Yumeko/Kira Timurov.
  • Death Becomes Her (1992): This dark comedy has doubled in work count for the second quarter in a row, while still staying under the radar of the top 20. You can now read close to 200 Madeline Ashton/Helen Sharp works, so enjoy.
  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: This is a French dark fantasy RPG which was released in April 2025. The fandom is primarily gen, but it's growing about 5 F/F works per week, and the top F/F ship is mage Lune / warrior Sciel.

Fandoms that are losing ground

Each of these fandoms dropped on the chart by at least two places, comparing the average in the past twelve weeks to the twelve weeks before that.

  • プロジェクトセカイ カラフルステージ!| Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! (Video Game): This is a rhythm game with a plot involving virtual singers and a fantasy dimension. It was first released in English in late 2021, and has charted consistently since June 2022, with a current chart streak of 170 weeks, and 27 weeks in the top five. Its average chart rank fell 3.1 points, from 5.4 to 8.5. The fandom is about half F/F, with a number of well-represented ships.
  • RWBY: This is an animated web series with four female protagonists, which first premiered in 2013, and continued in several forms through early 2024. It has charted consistently since May 2017, and has an impressive current chart streak of 438 weeks. Its average chart rank fell 2.5 points, from 9.6 to 12.1, probably simply due to the lack of new material in the past year. It is predominantly F/F, and the major ships are among the protagonists, with the two top ships being Blake Belladonna/Yang Xiao Long and Ruby Rose/Weiss Schnee.
  • Game of Thrones (TV): We talked about Game of Thrones last report. It has fallen another 2.4 ranks this quarter, from 17.5 to 19.9, and in fact has not appeared on the chart since July.
  • Coronation Street: This is a British soap opera which has been running since the 1960s. It has appeared on the chart a total of 46 times, and currently has a two-week streak. Its average weekly rank has fallen by 2.2 in the last quarter, from 12.9 to 15.1. AO3 interest in the fandom seems to be primarily driven by the canonical F/F ship Carla Connor/Lisa Swain, which is tagged in 70% of all works.
  • Yellowjackets (TV): This is a very popular thriller series involving a high school girls' soccer team whose members are stranded in the wilderness for many months, and the same characters 25 years later. It has a 59-week chart streak out of 124 total appearances. It's not in trouble, it's just falling out of the top five, dropping from an average rank of 2.6 last quarter to 4.7 this quarter. Fic in the fandom is overwhelmingly F/F, and the top ships are Shauna Shipman/Jackie Taylor, Lottie Matthews/Natalie Scatorccio, and Van Palmer/Taissa Turner, all of whom are members of the soccer team.

I'm interested in signal-boosting recs in all of these fandoms, so if you read in any of them, let me know what you've liked and I'll pass it along!
