High-level stats for week of 2025-01-07 - 2025-01-13

  • Total works categorized F/F on AO3: 9477 (-1184 from last week)

  • Works I classified F/F: 5566 (-608 from last week) (2504 new, 3062 continued)

  • 0.66% of all 841681 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • The top five is totally stable since last week. I don't even see any major changes in relative work counts.
  • Hololive returns to the chart in its second-ever appearance; the first was last October (though other Virtual Streamer Animated Characters subfandoms have had other appearances in the past). It replaces Honkai: Star Rail.
  • Grey's Anatomy celebrates 120 consecutive weeks on the chart. Genshin Impact reaches 210 consecutive weeks.

High-level stats for year 2024

  • Total works I classified as F/F on AO3: 117295 (+3833 from last year)

  • 14.07% of all 833418 AO3 works I've classified F/F were initially created this year

A few callouts about this year:

  • Hey, look, I made a thing. I've been meaning to add some extra regular reports to the rotation for awhile now, and took the excuse of it being the beginning of the year to build an annual report. This was fairly easy; it's basically the same report as the weekly report. But it took some wall-clock time and effort to actually crunch the numbers. Anyway, here we are!
  • This year's top five has similarities and differences from last year:
    • Harry Potter remains in the top slot, and you can see that fandom's slow year-over-year climb over the past eight years. (I'm sympathetic to those who find this a bit discouraging.)
    • Genshin Impact has fallen a bit since last year, but remains in the top five, and related game Honkai: Star Rail had a good year, reaching rank 11 overall.
    • The other three top-five fandoms are new, though no surprise to those who follow the weekly report: MCU jumped a bit thanks to Agatha All Along, League of Legends jumped quite a bit due to Arcane season 2, and Hazbin Hotel vaulted into fourth place in its first annual chart appearance.
    • Wednesday, Stranger Things, and Owl House, all exited the top five since last year, though they remain in the top 20.

  • Only three top 20 fandoms are new to the chart, which seems like pretty good continuity year-over-year. In addition to Hazbin Hotel, D&D enters at rank 18 due to Baldur's Gate 3, and Criminal Minds enters at rank 19 (due to the Emily/JJ ship, which I actually don't know much about, and seem not to have covered in the past). The three fandoms that exited the annual chart in 2024 to make way for these are Warrior Nun (which charted only in 2023, but was at rank 11), She-Ra (which was on the chart for 5 years starting in 2019, and maxed out at rank 2 in the 2020 ratings), and Star Wars (which has certainly charted in the past, but I don't have high-quality pre-2023 data about when).
  • That leaves 11 fandoms which sat lower on the annual chart during both 2023 and 2024: Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE!, A Song of Ice and Fire, Boku no Hero Academia, Supergirl, Honkai: Star Rail, Grey's Anatomy, RWBY, Yellowjackets, Doctor Who, and Once Upon A Time (which is noteworthy for having been on the chart without interruption since 2012, including a couple of first-place finishes in 2014 and 2015, though both this year and last it has barely hung on at rank 20).
  • I hope you find this interesting; feedback is very welcome!

  • Total works categorized F/F on AO3: 10304 (+989 from last week)

  • Works I classified F/F: 6179 (+663 from last week) (3197 new, 2982 continued)

  • 0.74% of all 836249 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • The top three remains steady, with both League of Legends and MCU continuing their high work counts. Wicked stays in the top five, and Supergirl has its first top-five appearance since last summer, edging Hazbin Hotel into sixth place.
  • Alien Stage, Coronation Street, and She-Ra return after short absences. They replace Avatar (both occurrences), and Once Upon a Time.
  • Hazbin Hotel celebrates 50 consecutive weeks on the chart. Owl House reaches 230 chart-weeks.

  • Works I classified F/F: 5516 (+168 from last week) (2720 new, 2796 continued)

  • 0.66% of all 833052 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • League of Legends is still going very strong in its sixth week at rank 1.
  • Avatar: Legend of Korra and Avatar: The Last Airbender are both on the chart this week, which occasionally happens (some of the ships overlap, some don't). The 100 also returns. Coronation Street leaves the chart after a 6-week run. She-Ra leaves the chart after 39 consecutive weeks (317 total weeks).
  • Chart anniversaries: Game of Thrones has been on the chart for 40 consecutive weeks. A couple of big hitters who are still around: RWBY reaches 400 consecutive chart-weeks, and Supergirl, still the longest-tenured fandom on the chart, reaches 470 consecutive weeks.

  • 0.64% of all 830332 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • League of Legends has fallen off its peak work count but is still going strong with twice as many works as any other fandom. Wicked ticks up again to rank 4.
  • Avatar: Legend of Korra is back after a couple of months away. It replaces Alien Stage, which falls off the chart after a 7-week run.
  • Chart anniversary: Yellowjackets hits 20 consecutive weeks in its latest run.

  • 0.65% of all 827802 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • League of Legends is flat week-over-week, remaining in a commanding number one slot. MCU is beginning to fall off its post-Agatha peak, but is still comfortably at rank two.
  • Once Upon a Time returns after a few weeks away, replacing The 100.
  • A couple of chart anniversaries in the 2+ year range: Addams Family/Wednesday celebrates 110 consecutive weeks on the chart. Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! reaches 130 consecutive weeks.

  • 0.68% of all 825166 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • Incredibly, League of Legends is still on the upswing: it gains 125 works week-over-week. It also celebrates its 160th consecutive week on the chart.
  • Wicked vaults onto the chart at rank 6, in its first appearance since 2019, no doubt thanks to the new movie. It replaces Life Is Strange.
  • Coronation Street ticks up again, to rank 15.
  • Anniversaries: Boku no Hero Academia celebrates 20 consecutive chart-weeks. Harry Potter reaches 310 consecutive chart-weeks.
  • The 2024 Rare Femslash Exchange is open. Nominations run until December 11th, and signups begin December 13th, with assignments eventually due February 7th. A ship counts as rare if it has fewer than 250 completed works on AO3, so that doesn't necessarily even rule out every ship listed on the top 20 chart here. There are almost certainly opportunities to give a ship you like a boost.

  • 0.64% of all 822311 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • League of Legends is seriously blowing up. In its second week at rank 1, the fandom has an unprecedented number of new or updated F/F works. In fact, both MCU and League of Legends broke work count records in November; every week of last month saw more works from the top fandom than we'd ever seen prior to last month. This week's League of Legends numbers just take it to a new level.
  • Meanwhile, Coronation Street hits a personal-best rank of 16.
  • The 100 returns to the chart after a couple of weeks away, replacing Star Wars.
  • Prompts and fills are open for the 15th annual Femslash Kink meme. It's very impressive that this event has been happening for 15 years; read cleo's post about the timeline and status of the project.
  • This year's sapphic stocking stuffers exchange is open for the next few weeks for prompts, and the rest of December for fills.

  • 0.6% of all 819739 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • And, there it is. League of Legends doubles in work count for the second week in a row, and vaults into first place, thanks to season 2 and Caitlyn/Vi. MCU is flat week-over-week, and moves down to a close second fueled by Agatha/Rio. (MCU also celebrates 30 consecutive chart-weeks in its latest run, out of 465 total.)
  • Star Wars is back for the first time since September, replacing Once Upon a Time.
  • Thanks to tumblr user batnbreakfast for answering last week's question about Coronation Street: the sudden chart appearance for the long-running soap opera is due to a canon friends-to-lovers development for Carla Connor/Lisa Swain.

  • 0.59% of all 817453 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • MCU has fallen off last week's peak, but is still crushing the charts, with over twice as many new/updated F/F works as the next fandom.
  • Meanwhile, League of Legends is up at rank 2. That's a jump of 81 works week-over-week. Given that Arcane season 2 dropped only two days before the end of the week represented in this listing, I expect next week will be even stronger.
  • Those surges take Harry Potter out of the top two for the first time in two years, which seems fine.
  • Web series Alien Stage continues to slowly climb the chart, reaching another best-ever rank of 13.
  • Long-running British soap opera Coronation Street joins the chart at rank 18, its first appearance since (wait for it) 2015. Maybe there's a canon reason for this jump, or maybe someone is running a successful exchange or prompt. If you know, tell me, and I'll mention it next week!
  • Once Upon a Time also returns, and those two fandoms replace Batman and The 100.
  • Finally, the new Problematic Femslash dreamwidth community is running a Sapphic Dead Dove December prompt event. I don't know the community, but I assume it is what it says on the tin, so go there if you go there and don't if you don't.

  • 0.66% of all 815269 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • I always post these stats using the "relative rank" graph, because it's the easiest useful view to put together, but sometimes it understates something interesting, and this is one of those times: MCU F/F works are up by about 75% week-over-week, presumably because the final episodes of Agatha All Along dropped.
  • Web series Alien Stage reaches a best-ever rank of 14 in its third chart appearance.
  • Life Is Strange is back after a week away, and Batman is back for the first time since March. They replace Dangan Ronpa and Once Upon a Time, the latter of which ends a chart run of 14 consecutive weeks (out of 641 total chart appearances).
  • Grey's Anatomy celebrates 110 consecutive weeks on the chart. Genshin Impact reaches 200: the video game fandom has been on the chart without interruption since December 2020.

A few callouts this week:

  • The top five stays consistent week-over-week.
  • Web series Alien Stage returns to the chart after several months for its second-ever appearance. Dangan Ronpa, which was once a regular but hasn't been on the chart since 2022, is also back. Those two replace Avatar: The Last Airbender and Life Is Strange.
  • Web series Murder Drones celebrates its first 10 consecutive weeks on the chart.

A few callouts this week:

  • MCU remains in first place for a third week, and fic count is still growing week-over-week.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender and Life Is Strange return after absences of about a month each. They replace Miraculous Ladybug and Honkai: Star Rail.

  • 0.61% of all 807790 AO3 works I've classified F/F were updated this week

A few callouts this week:

  • Fun fact: last week's post was the most active Week In Review post on tumblr ever, primarily due to MCU (Agatha All Along) fans. Anecdotally, it seems that F/F shippers are very excited about this show, which is at rank 1 for the second week, and has added 57 F/F works week-over-week.
  • Miraculous Ladybug is back on the chart for the first time since April. The 100 and Honkai: Star Rail are back after shorter absences. They replace Dead Boy Detectives, Doctor Who, and Hololive, after one week each.
  • Chart anniversaries: Game of Thrones and She-Ra each reach 30 consecutive weeks in their latest chart appearances. RWBY reaches 390 consecutive weeks. And Supergirl is at 460 consecutive chart-weeks, which continues to be the longest streak of any fandom currently on the chart.

A few callouts this week:

  • There's something you don't see every day. MCU vaults into first place on the strength of Agatha All Along. Believe it or not, this is only the sprawling fandom's second week ever at rank 1, and the last time was in 2015. Harry Potter is knocked to second place after 19 consecutive weeks at rank 1.
  • Two fandoms, Dead Boy Detectives and Hololive, make first-ever chart appearances this week. They're joined by returning fandom Doctor Who. These three replace Class of '09, Warrior Nun, and Honkai: Star Rail.

  • Chart anniversaries: Boku no Hero Academia reaches 10 consecutive chart-weeks (out of 320 chart appearances ever). League of Legends hits 150 consecutive weeks. Harry Potter is at 300 consecutive chart-weeks out of 829 total appearances, 144 of them at rank 1.
