I want to shine an occasional spotlight on fandoms that are in flux. There are two kinds of fandoms here:
- Fandoms that are growing rapidly, which are typically not in the top 20 now, and may never get there, but might be interesting for F/F readers to check out and encourage.
- Fandoms that are losing ground on the top 20, and seem to be "post-peak." They may well peak again in the future, but it's a good moment to look back at the impressive amount of F/F which has been written so far.
I'd love for readers to help me signal-boost some recs for these fandoms. If you've read and enjoyed F/F fic in any of the fandoms listed in this post (either the new ones or the old standards), please send me some works you liked! I'll share all the recs I get in a future Week In Review post. Feel free to send recs on Tumblr as reposts, inbox messages, or DMs, and on Dreamwidth as comments or messages. (Let me know if you don't want to be credited for your rec.)
Fandoms that are growing rapidly
Each of these fandoms has at least twice as many total F/F works now as it did 12 weeks ago.
- The Pitt (TV): You know what this is. It's HBO's extremely popular hospital drama, whose second season dropped earlier this year. It's been in the top three on the chart for the past couple of months, and the set of F/F works is growing by about 110/week. About 1/6 of overall works in the fandom are tagged F/F, and the biggest F/F ships are Garcia/Santos, Javadi/McKay, and Al-Hashimi/Santos.
- Três Graças (TV): It's a Brazilian telenovela about a mother and daughter, which has a canonical F/F ship, Lorena/Eduarda. It's growing by about 12 F/F works/week, and the fandom is new this year. Almost all works are F/F works involving the primary ship, and are written in Portuguese.
- กฎหลัก...ห้ามรักเธอ | Girl Rules (TV): This is a Thai GL series that premiered in March, and is focused on the relationships among six women who work in the fashion world. It's growing by about 8 F/F works/week. Unsurprisingly for a relatively ensemble fandom, there are several distinct ships with a decent number of works.
Fandoms that are losing ground
Each of these fandoms dropped on the chart by at least two places, comparing the average in the past twelve weeks to the twelve weeks before that.
- The Wicked Years Series - Gregory Maguire: This Wizard of Oz remix with a popular recent two-part movie was on the chart for 70 consecutive weeks, including several weeks in the top 5 last year, until the beginning of April when it suddenly wasn't. It had an average weekly rank of 10 last quarter. It's shrinking because the second movie was released and there's now no new content. The top ship is and always was Elphaba/Galinda.
- Stranger Things (TV 2016): This speculative fiction TV show has appeared on the chart 126 times over the course of its several-year run, is currently having a 26-week streak, and it was in the top place as recently as February. The show ended in December, so that's why it's losing ground on the chart now, falling from an average rank of 3.4 last quarter to 8.5 this quarter. The top F/F ship, by a wide margin, is Robin/Nancy.
- Marvel Cinematic Universe: MCU has been on the chart 485 times, including an active run of 234 weeks. It fell from an average rank of 7.6 last quarter to 11.5 this quarter. The reason for the decline is that more time has passed since 2024's Agatha All Along, whose primary ship Agatha/Rio is the biggest F/F ship MCU has ever had. Other popular ships are Yelena/Kate and Wanda/Natasha.
- Grey's Anatomy: This medical drama has an active chart streak of 4 weeks, of 346 total appearances. It fell from an average weekly rank of 12.2 last quarter to 15.1 this quarter. It's a very long-running show and has had several popular F/F ships, primarily Meredith Grey/Addison Montgomery, Arizona Robbins/Callie Torres, and, more recently, Maya Bishop/Carina DeLuca.
- Coronation Street: This is a British soap opera, and canonical F/F ship Carla Connor/Lisa Swain is present in the wide majority of works in the fandom. It has appeared on the chart 77 times, and has an active streak of 2 weeks. It fell from an average weekly rank of 16.0 last quarter to 18.7 this quarter. It's a very long-running show with a lot of characters and relationships, so I suspect its fandom simply doesn't overlap with AO3 much, and enthusiasm for the Carla/Lisa ship was an anomaly.
